SBS Bank is a building society and registered bank in New Zealand founded in 1869 as Southland Building Society.[1] It is New Zealand's largest building society, and claims to be the only building society in the world to have become a recognised bank while maintaining its mutual status.[1] Its head office is in Invercargill. The bank has diversified into fund management and life assurance, and at 31 March 2010 had total assets of $NZ2.63 billion.[2]

By 2001 the society's total assets exceeded NZ$1 billion, making it the largest building society in New Zealand.[3] The society changed its trading name and was registered as a bank on 7 October 2008.[1]

Branches

There are 15 branches throughout New Zealand, with most of them located in the South Island.
